We’re back with the results of the fantasy guru rankings for Week 4. Each week, Randal LaBine, SB Nation Fantasy contributor and owner of the Mascot Radio blog, compiles the projections, by position, of some of the more popular fantasy gurus on the web. After the games are played, he goes back and ranks how they did. This will help you decide which guru on the web you want to take advice from for the games.
Yahoo’s Andy Behrens Most Consistent
After Week 4, we are seeing some players (Steve Smith, Sims-Walker, Ronnie Brown) step up and do so consistently. Among gurus, we’re seeing the same thing. Andy Behrens of Yahoo has been the most consistent individual guru for 3 weeks. Jamey Eisenberg of CBSSports.com has strung together 2 solid showings. But Karabell of ESPN, for example (sorry to single you out) has yet to finish in the top 10 overall. Here’s the Week 4 recap.
TOP 10 QBs: Garrard, Big Ben, Rodgers, Peyton Manning, Favre, Cutler, Rivers, Brady, Eli Manning, D. Anderson.
No one had Derek Anderson, for obvious reasons, but several gurus benefited from Big Ben, Favre, and Eli Manning. Kudos to Andy Behrens, who has been among the top 5 gurus ranking QBs every week. That’s the kind of consistency you want in a guru.
1. Rotter (Fox), 182.32.
2. Harris (ESPN), 180.69.
3. NFL.com Projections, ESPN Composite, Behrens (Yahoo), 180.22.
Dishonorable Mention: SI Projections, 147.03. SI Projections for QBs have been consistent. Consistently poor.
TOP 10 RBs: Mendenhall, R. Brown, Forte, P. Thomas, Rice, Slaton, K. Smith, Harrison, Addai, R. Williams.
Mendenhall and Slaton finally lived up to the hype, Ronnie Brown and Pierre Thomas continue to pound away, and Addai and Ricky Williams are quietly putting together nice seasons.
1. Rotter, 151.85. Rotter was 1st in ranking QBs and RBs. Nicely done!
2. Piankowski (Yahoo), Funston (Yahoo), Behrens, 138.80. The Yahoo guys were solid, and there’s Behrens again.
3. Harris, 138.30. Harris was also top 5 for QBs.
Dishonorable Mention: Berry (ESPN), 115.00. Nothing too egregious here, but the Julius Jones pick backfired.
TOP 10 WRs: Steve Smith (NY), Sims-Walker, Massaquoi, C. Johnson, Mason, Ward, Marshall, Houshmandzadeh, Britt, Ochocinco.
The other Steve Smith is quickly becoming THE Steve Smith. Sims-Walker is having a breakout season. Massaquoi? Britt? Maybe one-week wonders. And just after I traded Housh in my league, he overcomes the nickname Houshmand-nada. For the 2nd straight week, Andre Johnson and Greg Jennings weren’t top 10. Jennings on the season is actually trailing his teammate Driver.
1. Yahoo Composite, 132.25.
2. Behrens, 124.35. Behrens. Again!
3. Karabell (ESPN), 123.30. Karabell was the only guru to pick Ward in the top 10. Is Ward showing that he’s still more consistent than Santonio?
Dishonorable Mention: CBS Projections, 81.80. CBS was easily last, thanks to Braylon Edwards (the Brown), D. Henderson, Ginn, and K. Walter.
Overall Guru Rankings for Week 4
Each week, a site’s projections have been both the best and the worst, with the individual humans in the middle. But the projections are inconsistent — last week ESPN was on top, this week they are 16th. NFL.com is #1 this week, but 12th last week. When in doubt, I’d go with Behrens, who has yet to finish below 6th place overall.
