The Baseball Chronicle has unearthed a Pittsburgh Pirates promotional poster dating back to 1909. The artwork, which you are encouraged to peruse, depicts the team on a pirate ship as they force members of the Chicago Cubs to walk the plank. Startlingly, this appears to be documentation of a real-life occurrence: following the Cubs’ 1908 World Series win, they were apparently all forced to walk the plank and drowned. I can’t think of any other reason why we haven’t seen them in the Series since.
