Yesterday we brooded over boxing, the morning after, but now it’s on to the good stuff: will boxing fans get to see the fight that’s been on everyone’s minds for years?
Will We See Pacquaio-Mayweather?
↵The L.A. Times spoke to HBO’s Ross Greenberg minutes after the Pacquiao-Cotto fight:
↵↵“It’s a simple negotiation. There’s so much money to be made. If it doesn’t happen, there’ll be a revolt. Nothing else is acceptable, and I’m speaking on behalf of the American public and the sport itself.”
↵↵Indeed, despite the obstacles and considerable egos on both sides, money just might be what brings this fight to fruition. And SB Nation’s Bad Left Hook says that’s just fine:
↵↵There’s nothing else. It’s the mega-fight to end the mega-fights. What fight has been bigger and more relevant than this one could be? Two amazing fighters, the undisputed 1-2 pound-for-pound in the world. When’s the last time that happened?
↵Make them each a graph and show them the potential money for this fight compared to literally anything else they could do. It can be about everyone’s wallets if that’s what you want it to be. However it has to be to make the fight happen.
↵↵This fight will go a long way toward resuscitating a sport that, despite modest success in recent years, has lacked the glamour it enjoyed in past decades; it’s something that should happen, if only for the sake of boxing. And if that means exploiting the fighters’ relative greed, then so be it. As long as the world finally gets to see the “mega-fight to end all mega-fights.”
