Isiah Thomas: Please Take It Easy On Me

Isiah Thomas hears the controversy Bill Belichick is facing today and quietly chuckles to himself. Only three games into his new job as head coach at Florida International and already Isiah is making more noise off the court than on it. First, in a loss at Monmouth, Thomas was the target of the student section for 40 minutes, getting harassed with boos, taunts about his sleeping-pill overdose and sexual harassment trial and chants of “Magic hates you!” His feelings were clearly hurt, because Sunday night, while getting blown out, Thomas actually asked Doug Wojcik, Tulsa’s head coach, to take his starters out of the game.

↵↵“It’s a 40-minute game. If you want the truth of it, go back to the (North) Carolina game Monday night, when Carolina was pressing them with 3 minutes left,” Wojcik said, referring to FIU’s 88-72 loss at North Carolina. “I don’t press, and I don’t embarrass anybody. But it’s a 40-minute game, and I’m in this game to get better.”

↵↵Wojcik added, “I’ve never seen anything like that. It was very bizarre.” Well, we have: In 2006, as head coach of the Knicks, Thomas was so upset that the Nuggets still had their starters in during a lopsided game that he reportedly had his players intentionally foul. (“Thomas said he told [Carmelo] Anthony that he and Marcus Camby shouldn’t have been in the game after it was decided. A source in the league ... said that Thomas also advised Anthony not to go near the basket shortly before the hard foul occurred.”)
