Don’t worry. This isn’t about the fourth-down call. That’s behind us now. No, this is about the decision Belichick didn’t make at the end of the game that may have likewise cost his team a shot on offense. According to the brilliantly designed Zeus Football (via the WSJ), once the Colts’ Joseph Addai ran the ball to the one yard line, the Patriots should have allowed Indianapolis to score. That decision would have given the Patriots an added two percentage points in win probability. Instead, the Colts were able to kill extra time off the clock and limit the Patriots’ possession to :13 seconds and, of course, the Patriots lost.
Bill Belichick’s Other Bad Decision
↵It’s not that this would have worked. Much like the fourth-down call, it would have been roundly pilloried. But since everyone’s already proven that Belichick made the right call on fourth-down, here’s one he actually missed. And now let us never speak of the words Bill Belichick and “fourth down” ever again.
