Brian Westbrook To Visit Concussion Specialist

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that Eagles running back Brian Westbrook will consult with a concussion specialist in Pittsburgh after Westbrook suffered his second concussion of the season last week. Westbrook will seek an opinion on when or if he can resume playing.

Schefter points out that Steve Young, Troy Aikman, and Bill Romanowski — who all had their careers end due to concussions — previously consulted with this specialist, so it’s certainly an inauspicious sign that Westbrook is meeting with him.

But considering how serious and long-lasting the after-effects of concussions can be, it is clearly the right move. The Philadelphia press has already begun calling for Westbrook to either sit out the rest of the year or retire, given his long-term health issues, and it seems like such an announcement will only be a matter of time.
