Not so sunny in Seattle

SEATTLE – I learned a new weather term today. “Sun spots”

Now, I used to think those were symptoms of dermatological distress, something that happened to aging skin, particularly for former glamour gals or golfers who had spent too much time under the brilliant rays of summer.

But in Seattle, “sun spots” is a term weather people apparently use to distinguish between days when the weather sucks normal, and days when the suckage is particularly fierce.

Where I’m from, generally speaking, it’s sunny or it ain’t. So I’m unfamiliar with the term. I’ve only been to Seattle a few times, and I don’t want to speak out of turn, but I assume that to mean those days when Mr. Sun peaks out for 30 minutes or so a few times a day.

(FYI, I’m not complaining about Seattle. Few places have perfect weather year-round. It is what it is, and I still love this city. Even the public library rocks; I checked it out yesterday.)

The extended forecast for this week did include “sun spots” for the weekend. Now, I don’t see them in the forecast. Ouch. Looks like the weather will be stuck in the 40s all week, with rain and wind. That includes Sunday, when temperature around kickoff will be in the mid-40s, with a decent chance of showers.

The teams arrive tonight. The Galaxy arrives around 4 p.m., but won’t train here today. Real Salt Lake ships out of Utah and lands just before 6 p.m. Both clubs hold their first Seattle practices tomorrow during the day.
