Concussions and how NFL players deal with them are among the hottest topics around the league these days. Ben Roethlisberger was not cleared by the neurologist to play for that very reason but, according to Ben’s teammate Hines Ward, that still shouldn’t have stopped him from playing.
Hines Ward: Big Ben Should Have Played
“I’ve lied to a couple of doctors saying ’I’m straight, I feel good,’ when I knew I’m really not straight. But I don’t think guys really about the future when they’re playing currently in the NFL,” Ward told Bob Costas, as transcribed by Pro Football Talk. “Trust me, the players, they wanna go out there because these games, you don’t get back. You’re never gonna get this Baltimore-Pittsburgh game back.”
The NFL is the ultimate masculine environment we have and a huge part of the concussion argument rests with the long-standing tradition of “sucking it up” for the here and now.
Hines Ward thinks Big Ben should have played because he’ll never get this game back. Of course, if Ben plays and extends the effects of his concussion, he might not get a lot of games, or memories, back. Let the argument on this issue continue…
