The New Jersey Star-Ledger's Dave D'Alessandro has made it official: Kiki Vandeweghe will indeed be taking over as Nets head coach beginning with practice on Tuesday:
After Mulling Offer, Kiki Vandeweghe Takes Nets Job, Replaces Frank As Head Coach
The 51-year-old Vandeweghe, who joined the Nets organization 23 months ago as Rod Thorn’s top adviser and then as Ed Stefanski’s replacement as GM, has never coached in the league before.
But his relationship with key players on the team – notably Devin Harris,Yi Jianlian and Courtney Lee – made him Thorn’s first choice, according to several team officials who asked not to be identified because the organization won't announce Vandeweghe's new post until Tuesday.
D'Alessandro says the Nets plan to make Vandeweghe's announcement official on Tuesday morning. Vandeweghe will be bringing current Bulls assistant Del Harris to the Nets with him, which, given the Bulls' current status as a playoff team is certainly surprising.
