One of the craziest parts about being a sports fan is when you come across a profile outlining what one of your favorite athletes eats on a daily basis. Often, it’s some absurd number like 6,000 calories, or 8 eggs for breakfast. And while the best of us can match that number on one lazy, hungover Sunday afternoon, it’s a whole lot harder to do it every single day.
Manny Pacquiao’s Insane Diet
↵And this New York Times profile of Manny Pacquiao and his trainer Freddie Roach is great for a lot of reasons. Pacquiao’s story is particularly absorbing (he ran away from home at 14 because his father ate the family’s dog?), and Roach is compelling, as well. But damn, this line was eye-popping:
↵↵Pacquiao eats six meals and drinks five protein shakes daily, consuming 7,000 calories but burning 500 more.
↵↵Wha…? Six meals a day? 7,000 calories? Seriously? The guy’s only 5’7 and 140 pounds… That’s the size of an eighth grader!
↵It’s just more proof: we don’t understand how athletes’ bodies work, and while they’re technically “human,” it may as well be a different species. Pacquiao will fight Miguel Cotto this Saturday on Pay-Per-View, and you can find full coverage of the fight at SBNs Bad Left Hook.
