This seems apropos, given the return of college hoops this evening, but it could come in handy for NBA players, too: A group of researchers at N.C. State analyzed thousands of simulated free throw shots on their way to discovering what they call the best scientific method for shooting a free throw. You have to release the ball at three hertz, so it spins softly on the rim; you have to aim five centimeters from the back of the rim; and you have to launch the shot at a 52-degree angle relative to the hoop.
