Western Carolina Hands Louisville Second Straight Home Loss

December 12 - Louisville, KY (Sports Network) - Mike Williams scored a game-high 24 points, leading five players in double figures, as the Western Carolina Catamounts took care of the Louisville Cardinals in a 91-83 decision in non-conference action at Freedom Hall.

Jake Robinson gave the Catamounts (10-1) a lift off the bench as he converted 6-of-11 shots behind the three-point line, en route to his 23 points. Brigham Waginger accounted for 13 points, six assists and four steals, followed by Richie Gordon and Brandon Giles logged 13 and 10 points, respectively, before each fouled out.

The Cardinals (5-3), losers of two straight and three of the last four outings, were paced by Edgar Sosa with 16 points and seven assists, but the guard also turned the ball over seven times as well. Preston Knowles checked in with 15 points, Jared Swopshire 12, while Terrence Jennings and Samardo Samuels 11 points apiece.

Louisville suffered countless mistakes in the first half and shot just 2-of-8 behind the three-point line in the period, so the Cardinal had to be happy with just a 34-29 deficit at the break.

Points were more abundant in the second half as both programs shot at least 50 percent from the field, but the visitors feasted at the free-throw line where they emerged 24-of-35 in the frame, en route to the eight-point win.

Western Carolina was guilty of 20 turnovers on the afternoon, but made up for it with 51 percent shooting from the floor and a 29-16 scoring edge at the charity stripe.

The Cardinals, who didn't lose back-to-back games all of last season, suffered 21 turnovers, which the Catamounts traded in for 28 points.

WCU is off to its best start since the 1958-59 campaign.
