Temple knocked off third-ranked Villanova 75-65 in a Philadelphia Big 5 game Sunday afternoon, thanks to some hot shooting -- the Owls shot a little better 53 percent from the floor and almost 48 percent from beyond the arc -- and an unexpected rebounding edge.
Juan Fernandez Earns His Place In Big 5 History
↵Argentine guard Juan Fernandez was the Owls star on the afternoon. He tallied 33, connecting on 11 of his 16 attempts from the floor and hitting seven of his 10 threes. Fernandez had 16 in the second half, a period in which the Owls outscored the favored Wildcats by 16.
↵Ryan Brooks scored 20 for the Owls, and Scottie Reynolds had 23 for the Wildcats in a losing cause.
↵Temple’s comeback in the second half is yet another example of how thrilling the Big 5 series can be. (St. Joseph’s effort in a losing cause against Nova in the Palestra on Wednesday night is another.) If you really claim to be a college basketball fan, you must to see a game in that hollowed building at least once. I’m not giving you a choice on this matter.
↵You also need to get there early, so you can explore both the building where the game came of age and the Big 5 exhibits in its hallways. At that point, you may get to understand how important this annual series is to the fans of the schools and the city of Philadelphia as a whole.
↵Though they really need to get it done and over with and invite Drexel into the club.
