Alex Kovalev has become a scapegoat of sorts for Ottawa Senators fans with four goals and 14 points on the season. He made up for those criticisms with three goals including his 400th career goal in the Senators' 4-2 win over the Hurricanes. Kovalev had this to say about his game:
Alex Kovalev Scores Hat Trick In 4-2 Win Over Hurricanes
‘It’s always great to pass that point,” said Kovalev, the 82nd player in NHL history to reach 400 goals. “I know it’s been 14 or 15 (games since he’s scored) or something like that, so I could have done that early but now I can forget about it.”
Ray Whitney scored the only two goals for the Hurricanes that have become the worst team in the National Hockey League with a 7-19-6. Manny Legace allowed three goals on 38 shots in the loss. Carolina's defense is what has been failing them this season as they have given up a league worst 3.56 goals/game. Coach Paul Maurice had this to say about the game:
“We need to win some games, so to be that close to it is frustrating,” Maurice said. “We’ve been playing good for about three weeks to a month now and we’ve had a lot of these nights. A little understaffed, a little undermanned and we’re running some kids a little hard. They’re playing, but you’ve got to get that puck across the line.”
The Hurricanes have a few days to try and figure out their game as they play Dallas on Wednesday while Ottawa has another game in the Battle of Ontario on Monday against Toronto.
