As suspected, Lions running back Kevin Smith will miss the remainder of the season after injuring his knee during Detroit’s loss to the Ravens, according to MLive.com.
Lions RB Kevin Smith Out With Likely Torn ACL
Lions head coach Jim Schwartz told the press that Smith tore at least one ligament in his knee, which may mean that his injury is more severe than was originally feared (the original reports suggested that Smith had only torn his ACL).
Smith’s injury is just the latest for a Lions team that has been plagued by injuries to its key building blocks all season. If Smith indeed did tear several knee ligaments, it could jeopardize the chances that he will be ready to return for the beginning of next season. It typically takes 6-9 months to recover from a torn ACL, and players usually don’t return to their former peak until the second season back once they’ve regained confidence in their ability to plant and make cuts. If Smith tore another knee ligament as well, he could very well miss the first few weeks of next year.
