The Phillies signed Placido Polanco to a three-year deal worth about $18 million on Thursday, bringing him back to the team he played for from '02-'05. The team will move Polanco from second base, where he won a Gold Glove with the Tigers, to third.
Phillies Close To Signing Placido Polanco To Deal That Makes Little Sense
Polanco is a 34-year-old with declining offensive skills, which makes the guys at SB Nation’s The Good Phight slightly curious about the decision to spend $6 million a year on him:
On its face, this just doesn't make a lot of sense: the team is about to overpay for the decline stage of a player with very little power or speed, being asked to shift positions no less--all while two clearly better options, Chone Figgins and Adrian Beltre, remain on the market. That said, if both of those players receive deals for three years or longer, and get paid upwards of $10 million a year, the Polanco contract makes some sense. But those are big ifs, and even if true it doesn't make the Phils a better team on the field in 2010.
Last season, the Phillies used a rotation consisting mostly of Pedro Feliz and Greg Dobbs at third base.
