You may have heard murmurs over the past few weeks that some companies’ association with Tiger Woods was costing shareholders billions.
What’s That? Tiger Woods Actually Made Money For His Sponsors?
↵
Yesterday, citing an academic study performed at UC Davis, reputable outlets like CNBC joined the chorus, chiming in with that timeless news technique, the misleading rhetorical question: Did Tiger Cost Shareholders $12 Billion?
↵No, not really. Or not at all, actually. According to SB Nation’s golf blog, Waggle Room, the study cited is completely bogus, and if anything, Tiger’s sponsors have made money in the wake of his controversy.
↵As Waggle Room’s Ryan Ballengee explains, “Provided that the media blindly accepted the study, I figured it might be time to debunk it.” And indeed, he does a nice job. If you’d like to learn more about Tiger’s actual effect on the companies that sponsor him, check it out.
