Brad Penny, Cardinals Agree To One-Year Deal

Brad Penny is staying in the National League, but it won't be in a Giants uniform. Buster Olney is reporting that Penny has signed a one-year contract with the St. Louis Cardinals:

The Cardinals and Brad Penny have a letter of agreement, for a $7.5 million base and $1.5 in performances bonuses. Physical likely on Wed.

After compiling a less than stellar 5.91 ERA in 24 starts with the Red Sox in 2009, he was released, allowing the San Francisco Giants to pick up the veteran righty. The switch to the National League was a good one for Penny, as he held opposing batters to a .209 batting average. His ERA was a nifty 2.59 in 41.2 innings of work.
