Martin Brodeur tied the record for most shutouts in NHL history with a 3-0 victory over the Buffalo Sabres tonight. It's up for debate what some of Brodeur's other records mean, like the all-time wins record because of the addition of shootouts, but no one ever thought that Terry Sawchuk's shutout record would ever be touched.
Martin Brodeur Ties Sawchuk at 103 Shutouts
If you look at the list of names in the top five on the shutout list, no modern goalie is on there but Brodeur. The NHL Network compared the feat it to Lou Gehrig’s record of consecutive games played, and like Cal Ripken breaking that record, Brodeur is on the verge of doing the impossible. Or at least very, very improbable.
Congratulations to Brodeur who is one of the greatest modern athletes no one outside of hockey knows.
