Surprising news out of ESPN: Hall of Famer Peter Gammons is leaving the company after this week’s winter meetings.
Peter Gammons Leaving ESPN
↵↵My decision to leave ESPN and move on at this point in my life has been conflicted. I owe a great deal of my professional life to ESPN, having spent more than half of my 40 years in journalism working for the network, and the choice to move on was made with nothing but the strongest feelings for the people with whom I worked. ESPN gave me a great deal more than I gave it, and will always be a huge part of who I am.”
↵↵He is widely credited for starting a Sunday notes section in the Boston Globe, a feature that is now copied in papers all across the country. Gammons took his expertise and knowledge to ESPN in 1988, and for the past 20 years was one of the best baseball analysts working. To call him an “insider” would be an understatement -- often team’s general managers would call Gammons to gather his opinions before giving the final yea or nay on a potential trade.
↵Gammons, who seemingly knows as much about music as he does about baseball, ended his statement today thusly:
↵↵My friend Tom Rush – who taught James Taylor and me our first guitar chords – once wrote how strange it seems to walk away alone. With no regrets.”
