Scouting report: Patrick Chung

Patrick Chung

5’11, 210 pounds | Strong safety | Oregon

Strengths: Great instincts for the position. Reads plays incredibly well. Seems like he’s always around the ball, especially against the run. Works through traffic nicely. Takes excellent angles toward the ball carrier. Chung does a great job breaking down and tackling in space. Can be an intimidating hitter over the middle in pass coverage. Moves well laterally, especially near the line of scrimmage against the run. Loves to play near the line to stop the run. Powerful hitter and a solid tackler. Very active near the line of scrimmage. Takes good angles outside. Closes on the ball quickly in the short area. Intelligent player. Called the audibles for Oregon’s secondary.

Weaknesses: Doesn’t have great deep or recovery speed when he gets beat. Solid athleticism for a safety. Above-average athlete, but a little stiff in the hips when he has to turn and run. Slightly undersized for a strong safety. Frame probably can’t carry much more weight. Average hands. Has dropped some interceptions.

Final word: Chung has been a starter since his redshirt freshman season and his instincts and intelligence shows as much. Has been an all-conference performer his entire career. Loves to play near the line of scrimmage against the run. Adept at pass coverage, but lacks some speed. A rover in college who could struggle at first adapting to a "pure" position in the NFL. Will contribute immediately on special teams. Relentless player. Fun to watch.

Round projection: 2
