Scouting report: James Davis

James Davis

5’11, 210 pounds | Clemson | Running back
Strengths: Adequate size to carry the load in the NFL. In a tandem with C.J. Spiller, Davis goes into the NFL with 753 career carries after being a four-year starter. Davis made his mark at Clemson with excellent vision to find creases he can squeeze through. Has quick feet that allow him to explode forward. Possesses some solid lower-body strength break tackles. Disappointing senior season can be more attributed to poor offensive line play than Davis’ ability. Decent route runner.
Weaknesses: If he wants to make an impact in the NFL, Davis will have to better utilize his agility. In college, he often relied on strength to get yardage. This, combined with his upright running style, could spell trouble at the next level. Does not have breakaway speed. Hands appear to be only average. Poor blocker. Had surgery in the summer of 2008 after separating his left shoulder.
FInal word: Davis is a one-trick pony. He can get solid yards, but isn’t shifty, is lacking in pass coverage and is an average receiver. There is somewhat of a misconception about Davis being a power back because he was the “Thunder” portion of Clemson’s running back duo. While he does have some strength, he’s not a traditional 225-pound power back. Never ran for less than 4.4 yards per carry and had an impressive career. Totaled 10 or more touchdowns three years.
Round projection: 3
