Mark Sanchez Brings Tears to the Eyes of N.Y.

↵
↵The Jets moved up to No. 5 to grab Mark Sanchez. This ensures the QB will face years of being honored as the greatest quarterback in history, years of ruthless jokes in the media (and worse from the fans), or -- let’s be honest -- some of both. I wonder if Eli Manning has a playbook, or at least a PowerPoint presentation, to offer the new Jet.

↵In all honesty, there was too much to love about the Sanchez trade-and-pick. No, not in the football sense. The entertainment sense. Sanchez, hanging out in California, ruined the live shot by putting on a Jets cap on camera before the pick was announced. Radio City Music Hall exploded with that image, half in joy and half in horror. A set of young Jets fans looked like they had just got robbed, or at least punched in the crotch. Then -- in fantastic fashion -- a woman standing behind Sanchez (a girlfriend, a mom, Shelley Smith ... I don’t know) celebrated two minutes late with a Delhommesque fist pump. It was great.

↵Andre Smith’s family ruined the next pick (Cincinnati) by smirking on a live look-in as the tackle hung up his phone. But no one could possibly figure out what the Raiders would do! Obviously in need of a wide receivers, Oakland passed up two-time Biletnikoff winner Michael Crabtree for (of course!) fastest WR in the draft Darrius Heyward-Bey, prompting earning F grades from both Mel Kiper (who was 6-for-6 to that point) and Angry Todd McShay.↵
