Where did the Tyson Jackson at No. 3 come from?

Mock drafts are funny things. Mid-afternoon yesterday Mel Kiper released his final mock draft.

Up to this point, that was much earlier than Jackson has been projected. Kiper doesn’t seem to base the projection on any concrete facts. Mel says:

The pivotal team will be the Kansas City Chiefs. Much has been made of new general manager Scott Pioli’s penchant for trading because of his past with the New England Patriots. But I expect him to stay where he is for this draft (third overall) and turn the draft upside down by picking LSU DE Tyson Jackson.

Fair enough. Mocks are a guessing game.

Magically, Jackson started appearing at the No. 3 spot in other mock drafts. Rick Gosselin didn’t release his mock until just before midnight and put Jackson third.

Pat Kirwan of NFL.com put his up in the early evening with Jackson at No. 3. Scott Wright of DraftCountdown (re: Not NFLDraftCountdown, honest NFL!) inserted Jackson into the third slot.

So what exactly is going on here? Do these people know something that has had no reported momentum at all? Or are they just aping Kiper? Something makes me tend to believe the latter.

There was a blip by Jason Cole of Yahoo Sports about the Chiefs liking Jackson, but that’s been it.

Cole writes that the Patriots and Chiefs both see Richard Seymour in Jackson. I don’t at all. But we’ll find out in about six hours.

He’s a bit of a liability in the run game, but his potential in the pass game was enough for Buffalo Rumblings.

It’s a high-potential pick for a Detroit defense that needs a solid pass rusher.
