2009 NFL Draft Day One- Open Thread
Two hours and thirty minutes until Matthew Stafford is selected #1 overall by the Detroit Lions. After that, the draft is very fluid. Will Smith go #2? Will a team trade up to get USC QB Mark Sanchez? Will Aaron Curry fall out of the top 5?
What do you think? Chit-chat away folks. This is one of many open threads going up today. We’ll be posting updates to the thread main body text as well when we get information from John and Jason, who are both covering the draft LIVE from Radio City!
WELCOME TO THE 2009 NFL DRAFT!
[UPDATE] JasonB provides our first pick from inside Radio City Music Hall’s press area:
To quote Jason:
We are literally sitting in Keyshawn Johnsons shadow now...

And now, the official press pass (cue “Holy Grail” music):
Another update from JasonB:
Steve Young just said Hi. Hasn’t put his tie on yet...
[UPDATE]: We have a special Mocking the Draft podcast available which John and Jason did just minutes before they entered Radio City Music Hall. Enjoy.
[UPDATE]: From the draft floor-- JasonB is sitting next to Jason Cole of Yahoo sports. We overhead him saying that he’s heard that the Panthers aren’t finding any interest in Julius Peppers. We'll post more info if this changes, but right now it seems Peppers is staying in Carolina today.
[UPDATE]: The fans were just let in, so the buzz in the building has really picked up.
[UPDATE]: Our writers can confirm that the big talk on the draft floor is that the Rams are working to trade the #2 pick to the Redskins or Jets. No deals set yet, but talks are active.
[UPDATE]: Funny update from John:
Deion Sanders just jumped on the main stage and got roundly booed by the crowd. He seemed to enjoy it though.
