• In Aaron Maybin, Eric Wood, Jairus Byrd and Andy Levitre, Buffalo got four players who could start immediately. Very good start for the Bills, who have only three second-day picks.
• Miami really need to improve its pass defense and adding Vontae Davis and Sean Smith will definitely help do that. Either could play safety. Drafting Pat White with pick 44 was something of a surprise.
• New England had an interesting draft. Sebastian Vollmer was probably the biggest head scratcher of the day. They hit with Patrick Chung and Darius Butler. I’m not sure where Ron Brace plays and the team didn’t add a pass rusher.
• As expected, the Jets traded up to get Mark Sanchez. However, was essentially trading five players too much for the Southern California quarterback?
• Picking Michael Oher and Paul Kruger, the Ravens added two impact players. Oher can play on the right or left, depending on how the team feels about Jared Gaither.
• The Bengals got a real steal in round two taking Rey Maualuga. He’s immediately the face of their defense. As expected they took Andre Smith in round one.
• Cleveland had a puzzling day. The team traded three times in round one. In Abram Elam, they get a starting strong safety. Alex Mack and Brian Robiskie should start immediately. Mohamed Massaquoi seems like a puzzling pick and David Veikune is a little underwhelming.
• The Steelers only got Evander Hood on day one but have three third-round picks.
• The Texans’ two pass rushers, Brian Cushing and Connor Barwin, will fix the team’s biggest problem. They were probably hoping Patrick Chung or Louis Delmas would have dropped to them.
• A team that had a great draft was Indianapolis. While a receiver wasn’t added, Donald Brown is now the team’s best running back. Fili Moala gives them a difference maker in the middle.
• Everyone knew the Jaguars would take an offensive tackle at some point, but two? Eugene Monroe is clearly the team’s new left tackle. Eben Britton is sort of a man without a position after Tra Thomas was brought in.
• Tennessee addressed its biggest needs at wide receiver and defensive tackle. Kenny Britt is the kind of receiver the franchise has needed for years. Sen’Derrick Marks will help fill the sizable hole left by Albert Haynesworth.
Team-by-team thoughts on the AFC draft picks
• Denver made a league-high five picks on the first day. Knowshon Moreno was a good pick at 12, even though it was panned by some. Robert Ayers will have to prove he can transition to the 3-4. Cornerback Alphonso Smith was a steal at pick 37. Darcel McBath is underrated at safety. It’s a wonder why the team traded for pick 64 to take Richard Quinn, a blocking tight end. It’s hard to imagine he wouldn’t have been available at some point in the third round.
• Kansas City, to me, took a huge risk with the third pick. Instead of trading back to add a second first-day pick, the Chiefs took Tyson Jackson. Some people really like the pick. I do not.
• The Raiders did what the Raiders do. The team took receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey and safety Mike Mitchell much earlier than they should have gone. One of these days Al Davis will have a great track team.
• San Diego’s selection of Larry English at pick 16 was a reach. He’s a good player, but the Chargers have bigger needs than another pass rusher.
