Scouting the news

With the No. 1 and No. 2 picks in the draft almost officially being put on the trade block, it’s more clear than ever that this draft is all about money. That’s why, Skip Wood of USA Today writes, getting a pick right is more of an emphasis than ever.

Speaking of USA Today, check out their flash top 500, powered by NFLDraftScout. Also check out ESPN’s NFL Draft Machine. Very cool.

The Redskins were reportedly going hard after Jay Cutler before Chicago sweetened the deal. Does that mean Jason Campbell’s days are numbered? While the franchise has publicly said no, it’s interesting that they’re bringing Mark Sanchez in for a workout.

Did B.J. Raji test positive for marijuana the combine? If so, you won’t read about it on SI.com. This brings up an interesting theory on taking down a story completely online. You can’t after it’s printed, so why should it be done online?

Josh Freeman continues to make the rounds. He’ll work out for the Buccaneers next week.

Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald ranks the prospects from Florida colleges. Tops amongst them is Florida State’s Everette Brown followed by Percy Harvin. That’s about right. However, he doesn’t list Joe Burnett of Central Florida in his top 10. Burnett has become a hot prospect during the offseason.

Dallas owner/general manager/overlord Jerry Jones likes what he sees in Matt Stafford.

I really enjoy the New York Times blog The Fifth Down. Here’s a good example why. They refer to this year’s draft as anarchy considering the rumors of Detroit letting the time expire on its pick. Indeed, that would be crazy.

I can assure you, it’s never too late to start thinking about the 2010 draft. One of the top prospects will likely be Illinois receiver Arrelious Benn. He’s bulked up some since last season, which should make him even more dangerous.

Speaking of next year’s draft, stay tuned here at Mocking the Draft. I’m rolling out 2010 content over the spring and summer leading up to the college football season. You don’t want to miss out on what we have planned!
