SB Nation Writers Mock Draft: Round 2, Pick #34
With his first selection, Pats Pulpit ringleader MaPatsFan took Vontae Davis. He continues the defensive back trend here.
A major concern for the Patriots in 2008 was their lackluster showing in the defensive backfield. While not abysmal (running in the middle of the pack for for yards given up), there is room for improvement. The almost certain departure of S Rodney Harrison makes drafting a safety more important than ever and with the complexities of the NE defense, getting a draftee time with some experienced vets is critical; Brandon Meriweather will be an excellent mentor for Moore.
Louis Delmas was a serious consideration here, but he didn’t face a lot of elite competition. Most of the issues with Moore (heavy, lack of fluid hips) can be fixed with good coaching. On the positive side, Moore has a strong work ethic and will be a perfect fit for a team that values that over pure, raw talent.
MTD thoughts: If the Patriots wouldn't have released Harrison, this would be a terrible pick. As it is, it's decent only because New England has plenty of picks in the second round to find some linebackers. I probably would have went with Connor Barwin in this spot.
