Executives Behaving Badly, Hockey Edition

↵The concurrent NHL-NBA playoffs have been wild times for the men in suits! (Or the men who would be in suits if they weren’t desperately trying to hang on to any shred of their youth.) A few weeks ago Rangers coach John Tortorella attacked a Caps fan with a water bottle and waved a hockey stick in menacing fashion. Mark Cuban had a dust-up with Kenyon Martin’s mom, which led to a confrontation between Dallas fans and Carmelo Anthony’s girlfriend. And now Anaheim GM Bob Murray is being accused of throwing a chair in the press box at Joe Louis Arena on Thursday.

↵Detroit’s Fox affiliate reports that upon the Red Wings’ series-clinching goal, Murray wielded a chair and hit a 55-year-old TV producer who dared break the “no cheering in the press box” commandment. The producer, Rachel Paris, happens to be a woman.↵↵⇥Paris said in a phone interview she was in the press box working as a stage manager for a media outlet that she would not identify. A passionate Red Wings fan, Paris said Murray was apparently upset over her enthusiasm and used a stool on her to express his displeasure.

↵⇥“I was taken to the boards by Bob Murray and survived the hit. I felt like I was cross-checked and I didn’t even have the puck,” said Paris. Should Murray be charged with a criminal misconduct? Paris said “no” and declined to file a formal police complaint.↵↵In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Murray claims this is all a vast misunderstanding, that he didn’t throw the chair and that it was an accident. I’m not sure how those claims co-exist -- what was the accident if you didn’t toss a chair? -- but the cynical would guess a cynically fast cash payment was negotiated. But I’m not that cynical.
