Poised for a breakthrough season: Brandon Saine

Saine_medium
Ohio State running back Brandon Saine has everything a scout would want in a running back. At 6-foot-1 and 217 pounds, Saine has size and a build similar to Oakland's Darren McFadden.

He’s got the speed, too. In high school, he ran a 4.35 40-yard dash. He was the No. 2 recruit in Ohio and the state’s Mr. Football in 2006. He’s been utilized as a receiver and played some fullback to block for Chris Wells.

The problem for Saine has been a rash of injuries. Prior to the 2008 season, he pulled a hamstring and was behind in his development. That caused Dan Herron to take his place behind Wells as the Buckeyes’ No. 2 running back. That was the beginning of an injury marred 2008 which saw Saine rush for 65 yards on 26 carries.

Why he’s poised for a breakthrough: The main reason is his health. Unlike his freshman and sophomore seasons, Saine is now healthy. He displayed that health during Ohio State’s spring game, getting six carries for 55 yards.

If he does stay healthy, Saine should get upwards of 150 carries this season as the Buckeyes transition to a more run-based offense with quarterback Terrelle Pryor.

How good he could be: With Ohio State splitting carries, Saine may never be a true workhorse running back. But he has displayed the all-around game to be a good pro prospect. He could be as good as Willis McGahee, but has a lot to prove.
