T-Wolves Might Take Page from Vikings

One of the things I most like about writing about the NBA for a living is that it’s my favorite sport. Another is that I never have to pay attention to Brett Favre, except for when he shows up on Monday Night Football throwin’ the ball around like the bastard son of Charlie Daniels and Whale Wars. ↵

↵
↵Today, my innocence was spoilt. According to the Pioneer Press, the mysterious David Kahn hath made another trip to Spain to talk to Ricky Rubio. And, synergy of all synergies, there’s a Favre angle to it:↵↵⇥It’s still unclear whether the 18-year-old point guard could get out of his DKV Joventut Barcelona team’s contract, which includes a $6.6 million buyout, in time for Wolves training camp in October. ↵⇥
↵⇥
↵⇥But the Wolves, as the Vikings did this week with quarterback Brett Favre, would allow Rubio to come to training camp late. That’s because Rubio has started practicing with the Spanish national team and would be in shape. It’s expected to be several more weeks before the Wolves learn whether they will have Rubio for the coming season. But Rubio has indicated to Kahn that he’s willing to come to Minnesota if the buyout issue can be resolved. ↵↵Who’s to say whether Kahn’s strategy was directly inspired by Favre? There’s also a crucial difference between the two situations: Rubio will have been in practicing somewhere else, and is really young; Favre isn’t, and is old. Still, the fact that this latest chapter is written about with reference to Minny’s newest biggest sports story proves that someone is out to get me. All things in all major leagues eventually come back to Brett Favre. We all float down here.↵

I also don’t get why the “several more weeks” is set in stone if Kahn’s headed over there to try and work out the buyout issue. It’s not like Rubio has to give his two weeks. Perhaps it’s yet another tie-in: Rubio wants his arrival to generate the maximum drama, which means a build-up even after everyone knows it is so totally on. That’s totally Favre. And let’s not forget, the Wolves and Ricky alike would probably prefer to make sure that, if terms are reached, at least some part of the story isn’t overshadowed by Favre’s various Viking milestones.↵
↵
↵Hopefully, we will find out that Rubio is now willing to play in Minnesota because he’s always dreamt of meeting Brett Favre. Or because Favre’s presence has turned the city into a major market. See, the possibilities are endless.
