The senior running back class features a lot of powerful rushers, but none of them are real stars. The top senior back is Clemson’s C.J. Spiller, who is dissimilar to some of the other top seniors. Spiller is somewhat undersized at 195 pounds, but lightning fast. The same can be said for the second best junior running back, Jahvid Best of California.
2010 NFL Draft rankings: Running backs
Touting smaller running backs like Best and Spiller is difficult, though. Consider that both of them are listed at 195 pounds. Of the 16 1,000-yard rushers in the NFL last season, none weighed less than 200 pounds.
The lightest was Chris Johnson of the Titans at 200 even. In the defense of Best and Spiller, both Johnson and Steve Slaton of the Texans weighed just under 200 pounds at the end of their senior seasons in college.
All that said, junior Jonathan Dwyer of Georgia Tech looks to be the best natural runner among those eligible for the 2010 NFL Draft. He’s a great combination of power and speed.
