Serena, Venus Win Doubles Title at Open, Awkwardness Ensues
Serena and Venus Williams won the womens’ doubles championship today at the U.S. Open, which led to a mighty uncomfortable trophy presentation.
Interviewing the sisters for ESPN’s coverage, Patrick McEnroe seemed like he was going to avoid the topic of Serena’s outburst. He first asked a boilerplate question to Venus before asking a similar question of Serena. She gave a perfunctory answer about the match and seemingly forgot the names of her opponents.
Then, addressing the previous “tough” 48 hours of her life, McEnroe asked Serena whether her feelings had “changed” in the last day. Given the chance to apologize in person for the first time, Serena passed and gave a canned answer about loving her fans. McEnroe persisted but was met with boos from the crowd at Arthur Ashe Stadium. Doing her best Kanye West impression, Venus grabbed the microphone and politely told McEnroe that the boos probably meant the fans wanted to move on.
