Recently fired Montreal Canadiens coach Guy Carbonneau, recently departed NHLPA executive Glenn Healy, and active goaltender Kevin Weekes have all joined CBC's Hockey Night in Canada broadcasting team, the network reports.
Carbonneau, Healy, Weekes Join HNIC
Guy Carbonneau was fired from the Canadiens bench near the end of the Canadiens' disappointing centennial season, and had yet to find a new coaching gig. Things didn't get any better for the Habs after Carbonneau's departure, as the bleu-blanc-et-rouge were swept out of the playoffs in the first round by the Bruins. Carbonneau brings three Stanley Cup rings and a handful of outspokenness to the microphone, both assets which should serve him well.
Glenn Healy, a former goaltender who recently resigned from his post at the NHLPA, rejoins Hockey Night in Canada for a second stint, having left for the NHLPA two years ago. The Edmonton Sun even suggests Healy could be groomed as a successor to Don Cherry, though likely without Cherry’s signature upholstery.
The addition of Kevin Weekes is the most surprising, since Weekes is still technically an active player. Weekes is an unrestricted free agent, and is known as a solid (if not stellar) back-up goalie. He saw little action last year with the Devils, stuck behind both Martin Brodeur and Scott Clemmensen. It's likely that Weekes will stay open to offers, and could leave the studio pretty quickly if any team bites.
