The Ricmond-Times Dispatch’s Darryl Slater reports that tight end Greg Boone is now listed as probable and boundary corner Stephan Virgil as questionable.
Tech TE Boone Probable, Corner Virgil Questionable
Boone sprained his sternoclavicular joint against Alabama and Virgil injured his knee on one of the last plays of the game against the Crimson Tide.
Tech possess plenty of depth at tight end, but the injury at corner presents quite the problem for the Hokies’ secondary.
Even if Virgil does play, he will start at field corner while Carmichael starts at boundary. Hokies defensive backs coach Torrian Gray said as much earlier this week. Gray isn’t sure yet if Virgil will be physically ready for the demands of playing boundary, which requires more man-to-man coverage than field…This means sophomore Eddie Whitley could start at field corner against Nebraska. He has never started before.
In addition to Whitley making his first start, Rashad Carmichael will only be making his fourth start of his career. Nebraska threw for 278 yards last season against a Tech secondary that featured Macho Harris and a healthy Virgil. The potential inexperience at corner, usually a strength for the Tech defense, could prove costly.
Provided Boone returns, Tech fans may see the Wild Turkey formation for the first time this season.
