Knicks Getting Closer to Signing Lee, Robinson

Someday soon, this deal will become official. In the meantime, Alan Hahn of Newsday reports:

A source indicated that restricted free agent David Lee and the Knicks could have a one-year deal hammered out by the end of the week.

It is likely that the team’s other restricted free agent, Nate Robinson, may soon follow. The big issue is the Knicks don’t want to commit to either player beyond this year so they can clear enough cap space to make a run at The Global Icon (aka Lebron James), and perhaps another top-tier player. But if the salary cap falls as far as some fear in 2010, the Knicks will only have enough space for one max contract. In that case, their ideal scenario would be luring James to MSG, and locking Lee up with a long-term deal. So for now, they want to keep Lee happy with a bigger one-year deal than they otherwise need to give him, so that next summer there is no bad blood.
