Aaron Boone Returns to Majors Five Months After Heart Surgery

In March, when Aaron Boone found out he needed open heart surgery to replace his bicuspid aortic valve, a return to baseball was the furthest thing from his mind. "We'll cross that bridge when we come to it," he said at the time. He got to that bridge a lot sooner than expected.

Just five months after his career was put in jeopardy by the open heart procedure, Aaron Boone is back in the Majors. He was in the lineup this afternoon for the Houston Astros for an afternoon game against the Chicago Cubs. In his return, Boone will be playing first base and batting seventh for the ‘Stros.

The 36-year old had been in the minors since August 10 and was called up to Houston this past weekend. He went 0-4 in two games with Triple-A Round Rock.

When Boone had his surgery, doctors weren’t sure whether he would ever return to the game. However, they were nearly certain that if he did it wouldn’t be this season. No player had ever played in the Majors after an open heart procedure.
