My MLS Player of the Week vote: Cheers, Brad Davis!

Every week I vote on MLS Player of the Week. This week meant a particularly difficult choice, like being asked to pick out the worst reality TV show ever.

So my POW vote went to Brad Davis, the Houston Dynamo man who set up two goals with precision set-piece service and then nailed a splendid game winner to help rescue one that very nearly got away at home against Real Salt Lake.

But it could have gone to David Beckham, who had his best outing of 2009 in Galaxy shirt. He’s been steadily taking on more responsibility as he’s gotten more fit. And a slight tactical tweak helped as Chris Birchall was preferred at right midfielder to Landon Donovan, and his ability to provide more cover permitted Beckham freedom to roam forward worry-free. So Golden Balls weaved through the Toronto defense for a dandy goal, then finished the job with some hustle and a signature serve from the right.

And there was Chivas USA goalkeeper Zach Thornton, the former buffet buster who slimmed down to become, against all odds, one of the better backstoppers in MLS.

Finally, Columbus Crew do-all Guillermo Barros Schelotto supplied both goals as his side rallied on the road to split the points in Chicago. (FYI, Crew winger Robbie Rogers was great, especially after the break. But on this weekend, replete with command performances, he had no chance to squeeze into the conversation.)

Thoughts? Did I get it right with Davis? Bring it on! I can take it.

(UPDATE: I guess I wasn't the only one.)
