With Week 2 in the books, it’s time to look back at which potential waiver wire pickups are worth a look and which guys you can cut loose from your bench.
More Add/Drop for Week 3
Add These Players:
Mario Manningham and Steve Smith - Both young Giants receivers produced some jaw-dropping plays on Sunday night against the Cowboys. Between Manningham’s Antonio Freeman-esque juggled touchdown and Smith’s nifty route-running on his own score, the Giants appear to have a pair of playmakers capable of holding their own on the outside. Two factors suggest this duo could keep producing: first, the other Giants’ receivers, Domenik Hixon and Hakeem Nicks, are hurt. Manningham and the other Steve Smith will see a ton of balls simply because of attrition. And second, the Giants have surprisingly had trouble running the football through two weeks. Perhaps this says more about the strength of Washington and Dallas’ run defenses, but at this point, there has to be some concern about their inability to move the ball on the ground – particularly in the red zone. If this continues, the Giants will have no choice but to keep chucking it – and Manningham and Smith figure to keep benefitting. Snatch both up if they’re available, and count on WR3 production, with WR2 upside for both (although Manningham has slightly higher upside as more of a big play threat).
Laurent Robinson - Yes, the Rams are abysmal on offense. And yes, losing second overall pick RT Jason Smith will not help their cause. But someone has to catch the ball in St. Louis, and right now that guy looks like Laurent Robinson. After turning heads in preseason, the third-year pro is producing when it counts. A big target at 6-2, Robinson caught the Rams’ lone touchdown last week (and of the season). Through two week, he has nearly 140 yards, and at times he was the sole receiver Bulger looked to against Washington. Pick him up as a WR4 worth stashing and using on bye weeks.
Brent Celek- Like Robinson, Celek impressed during preseason, making him a late-round darling of fantasy cognoscenti. In last week’s blowout loss to the Saints, Celek racked up the yards, hauling in eight balls for 104 yards. While you shouldn’t count on anything approaching that level of production on a consistent basis in the Eagle’s spread-it-out offense, Celek should continue to be a solid start in 12-team and deeper leagues.
Mike Sims-Walker- He’s not likely to duplicate his production from last week, but with Troy Williamson’s injury, there figure to be plenty of opportunities in Jacksonville. Sims-Walker is worth a flyer in deeper leagues.
Feel Free to Drop These Guys:
Earnest Graham - He’s the odd man out in the Tampa Bay backfield. Make him the odd man out on your fantasy team.
Troy Williamson - A torn labrum has this speedster (and semi-popular sleeper) out for the year. Don’t be that guy – the one who has injured players on his roster.
Michael Clayton- Despite the absence of Antonio Bryant, Clayton received few looks versus the Bills, catching two balls for 27 yards. Cut bait on the former LSU star.
