Speaking to NBC, Phil Mickelson said of the final round, “It feels terrific.” Asked whether the Fed Ex Cup system has worked, Phil responded with sarcasm, “Lemme see if I get this right: I shoot a 65, he shoots a 70, and Tiger gets a check for $10 million. But seriously, I really enjoyed playing in the four Fed Ex Cup events.”
Mickelson, Woods React
He continued, “I’m looking forward to the offseason, but more than that, I’m looking forward to getting myself right for next year.”
As for Woods, after he sat out last season with a knee injury, Woods again won the Fed Ex Cup (his second overall win). He responded, “The whole idea is to be consistent, for the entire season, and try and position yourself as best as you possibly can for the playoffs. This year, I’ve played well, and very consistent. When I didn’t win, I was in the top 10, so I kept accumulating points, and then, you know, in the playoffs I played pretty good.”
To say the least. Woods may have struck out at the Majors, but Tiger also managed to finish near the top of the leaderboard in just about every tournament he entered. And while that may be underwhelming for him, personally, among mere mortals, that again places his firmly at the head of the class. And today, being head and shoulders above his peers—even if he couldn’t top Phil—made him a cool 10 million.
