Why Is Gameday in Boston? Mystery Solved: It’s Cheap

ATLEagle In Boston has real, insider-ish info on why ESPN Gameday has made the decision to go to Boston College this weekend instead of, you know, a place where people really care about college football with a game that matters in the grand scheme of things.

↵↵1. Problems the other candidates. This is the main reason. There isn’t a can’t miss game this weekend. The closest thing to a can’t miss is Oklahoma-Miami. However, Miami’s loss to VT and their move to LandShark aka Dolphins Stadium hurt their chance. GameDay feared hosting the show in front of an empty parking lot.

In short: we’d be in Miami, but even fewer of their fans will show up for a game than the relatively small but enthusiastic smattering we’ll get for a Boston College game. Add in the relative cheapness of staging the show within a stone’s throw of Bristol, a feature on BC linebacker Mark Herzlich and his fight with cancer, and the lack of compelling competition, and it is the lazy man’s edition of Gameday for the year. This isn’t the fun answer—OMG ESPNBOSTON.COM CONSPIRACY!!!—but it is the more likely one.
