With Week 3 in the books, let’s look at who out on the waiver wire deserves a pickup and who you should forget. Without further ado, here’s our Add/Drop for Week 4.
Add/Drop Week 4
ADD
Glen Coffee- With Niners starting RB Frank Gore looking likely to miss at least the next two weeks, preseason star Coffee is a must-add in all formats. While the former Alabama standout struggled against the Vikings’ sturdy run defense, there’s no reason to think he won’t do much better against the softer Rams and Falcons run defenses. Pick up Coffee now.
Brent Celek- Another week, another 100 yard game for the Eagles TE. While Celek’s two big games have come with Kevin Kolb at the controls, there’s no reason to expect him to disappear from the game plan once McNabb returns - Celek did catch a touchdown from McNabb in Week 1, after all. Celek is just another example of how deep the tight end position is this year. Snatch him up.
Vernon Davis- You want winners. Mike Singletary wants winners. And now it looks like Vernon Davis might be a winner - both in fantasy and reality. Davis has always tantalized fantasy owners (and GMs) with his physical tools - how many tight ends can run 4.38 40s? - but has never delivered consistently in the NFL. Last week’s 96 yard, two touchdown performance might be a sign that Davis is finally putting everything together. If he does - watch out! Of course, Davis has teased fantasy owners before, but still, Davis is worth stashing on your bench just in case he is figuring things out.
Mike Sims-Walker- With Torry Holt seemingly on his last legs, Sims-Walker very well could emerge as the Jags’ top wide receiver. Coming off last week’s 100 yard game, Sims-Walker finished with six catches for 81 yards (and a lost fumble), to lead the Jags through the air. No one will mistake the Jags for the Saints anytime soon, but even without a prolific passing attack, a team’s top target is a valuable fantasy commodity. Expect Sims-Walker to be a solid WR3 going forward.
Fred Taylor- The Patriots’ running back carousel is a fantasy nightmare. But with Laurence Maroney banged up, Taylor has emerged as the top option (at least for now), rumbling for 105 yards and a touchdown on 21 carries. Pick up Taylor on the off chance that the Patriots actually do settle on a lead back on a week-to-week basis; at the very least he should be a useful flex or RB3 going forward.
DROP
Laurent Robinson- The Rams top wideout is out for the season with a broken tibia. Cut him loose. Keenan Burton will likely replace Robinson in the Rams’ starting lineup.
Byron Leftwich- Before his 7 of 16 for 22 yard , Leftwich was actually a semi-sneaky fantasy play. Sure, you’d only play him if you were completely desperate (McNabb owners who missed out on Kolb?), but Leftwich racked up the yards and touchdowns in garbage time despite his slow-motion delivery, as the Bucs played catch-up in the first two weeks. Now comes the news that Bucs head coach Raheem Morris has seen enough: 2008 fifth round pick Josh Johnson will replace Leftwich as the starting quarterback. Ditch the former Marshall star.
