Just one week ago, in between games of a doubleheader in Florida, the Phillies held an 81/2-game lead in the NL East with just 13 games to play. Then the Braves decided they didn’t want to lose any more, and suddenly that lead is down to just four games, with only six to play. But Philly couldn’t really blow it. Could they?
Could the Phillies Blow NL East Lead?
↵↵“Some people have wanted to take for granted that we already won something, but I’m not that kind of person at all,” Charlie Manuel said before last night’s game. [...]
↵“The schedule has been perfect for them. That’s definitely not an excuse, because I feel we have the best team in our league,” Manuel said. “But the schedule’s been good for them. [Bobby] Cox might have made that schedule up. He announced his retirement and they let him go ahead and make the schedule.”
↵↵True, the Braves remaining schedule is easy -- final six games are all at home, and feature four against the MLB’s worst team, the Nationals -- but for the most part, the teams played the same schedule (both were lucky enough to see Washington as their opponent 18 times).
↵The Good Phight says it best: “God this is painful to watch.”
