And that should make you angry. Very angry. Because while you might watch baseball games and follow these things called “stats”, Heyman is free to vote based on sentiments like this:
Jon Heyman Has a ROY Vote and You Don’t
↵↵porcello is rookie of the year. 20-year-old kid winning 14 games in pennant race. dont even look at other stats.
↵↵Not to go all FJM on you, but this is crazy. In fact, let’s just take a moment to appreciate the full-on derangement of judging the AL ROY contest solely on the fact that Rick Porcello plays on a good team.
↵First, wins are easily the most overrated pitching stat; a pitcher obviously has no control over how many runs his team scores for him.
↵Second, the fact that Porcello’s team is in a pennant race is irrelevant. Like wins, it’s just another way of saying that the guys Rick Porcello plays with are not too shabby at this game called baseball.
↵And third, Porcello’s age is also immaterial. It’s called “Rookie of the Year”, not “Best 20 Year-Old on a Contender”. So for those of you keeping score at home (nerds - you’re using numbers!), Heyman is a perfect three for three when it comes to using criteria that have nothing to do with whether someone should win ROY. Bravo.
↵Meanwhile, if you do want to look at some “other” stats (aside from the classic “does he have good teammates” stat), check out this stream on some deserving AL ROY candidates. Porcello had a good year, but in a sane world governed by something we like to call empirical reality, he should NOT win Rookie of the Year. Rant over.
