No professional basketball team? No problem. Seattle’s doing just fine with it’s soccer team.
The Seattle Sounders Are Your U.S. Open Cup Champions
In their first year of existence, Seattle Sounders FC won the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup by defeating D.C. United 2-1 on Wednesday night.
Fredy Montero scored the opening goal in the 67th minute and Roger Levesque scored the game-winner in the 86th minute. United’s Clyde Simms scored in the 89th minute, too little too late.
The most visible face of the franchise, goalkeeper Casey Keller
“It’s right up there. Anytime you are in a cup final, whether it’s in Europe or it’s in the States or if it’s with the national team, winning a cup is winning a cup,” said Keller, a native of Olympia, Wash.
The Sounders were rankled when the game was scheduled to be played in D.C. instead of Seattle so the win was a bit of redemption for the squad and the city. Keller voiced that sentiment.
“We really felt this game should have been played in Seattle and we wanted to make a point and win it for our fans and our organization that have really made this a first-class experience for everybody so far and a model for MLS.”
17,329 fans attended the championship match.
