CSAC’s “random” drug tests that have so far hit on fighters with previous drug histories like Josh Barnett, Nick Diaz and now Sean Sherk. Sherk was popped for a positive PED test a few years back which he blames on the insane amount of supplements he was on. Now after being notified of the random drug test, Sherk announced he was injured and the UFC pulled him from his upcoming fight. From Wrestling Observer:
Sean Sherk Skips CSAC Random Drug Test
Word of the injury got out on the evening of 9/2, a few hours after he was scheduled to take a random drug test by the California State Athletic Commission. He didn’t get on the flight to California and when he no-showed, UFC informed the commission that Sherk was injured and was off the card
Sherk’s manager Monte Cox provided the following statement to BloodyElbow.com:
Sean has passed 7 drug tests since the California incident... he separated his shoulder in training and had to pull out of his fight... MRI was sent to Zuffa. He didn’t skip any test... if you’re not fighting, you’re not going to apply for a license. No big conspiracy in this.
The issue is the perception of a conspiracy. Obviously if he isn’t fighting there is no reason to get tested as part of getting a license. But let’s be realistic. Sherk was popped once already and now the timing just works out to look like as soon as he was told he’d be tested he found a way off the card. Maybe it’s all just a case of bad timing, but one does have to wonder if Sherk, loser of 2 of his last 3, was maybe looking for a little bit of an advantage in his next fight.
