Hey, Netflix: Give Sports Fans a Shot

If you listen to NPR or read Wired, you’re probably familiar with this month’s Netflix-related meme: The company that put Blockbuster out of business is taking dead aim at your cable company’s movie channels. This is a good thing if you enjoy movies, and not a good thing if you charge people who enjoy movies a monthly fee to watch them.

↵Today, David Warner asked a question I’m more interested in: What does this mean for sports fans?

↵

He soon answers his own question: Unless Netflix and other similar devices come up with a way to bypass the current model, we’re stuck. ESPN and Disney have no reason to upset the status quo, and cable companies own the distribution systems we need to watch the games we want to watch live. In other words, we’re screwed. At least when we want to watch sports.
