No. 1 Kansas Visits Shorthanded Tennessee

Knoxville, TN (Sports Network) - Walk-on Skylar McBee converted an off-balance three-pointer as the shot clock wound down in the final minute, helping undermanned, 16th-ranked Tennessee hold off top-ranked Kansas, 76-68, to deal the Jayhawks their first loss of the season.

The Volunteers have been mired in controversy lately, as four players were indefinitely suspended following weapons and drug charges after a routine traffic stop. Senior forward Tyler Smith, who averaged over 11 points a game and had a team-best 44 assists, was eventually dismissed from the team after further investigation.

The absences did not deter the Volunteers (12-2), who received a team-high 17 points from Scotty Hopson. In addition, Bobby Maze set new season-highs with 16 points, eight assists and seven rebounds. Renaldo Woolridge also provided a deep threat, hitting 4-of-6 from three-point range in a 14-point, eight- rebound effort, and McBee finished with six points.

Sherron Collins had a game-high 22 points to go with five assists and four rebounds for the Jayhawks (14-1), whose loss leaves two unbeaten teams in the country -- Texas and Kentucky. Tyshawn Taylor provided 13 points, while Xavier Henry had 10 points in the loss.

Cole Aldrich added seven points and a game-best 18 rebounds, but it wasn't enough for Kansas to overcome a 37.7 percent shooting day from the field.

The Volunteers have beaten the No. 1 ranked team two consecutive times, also accomplishing the feat February 23, 2008 at Memphis. Tennessee also moved to 36-2 in non-conference home games under head coach Bruce Pearl.
