Taken from SB Nation’s Bloody Elbow:Gray Maynard took an ugly split decision win over Nate Diaz to close out Ultimate Fight Night 20.
In a grudge match between two veterans of The Ultimate Fighter season 5, both fighters came out with something to prove. Maynard wanted to prove that Diaz win over him on the reality show was a fluke. Diaz wanted to prove the opposite.
In the first round, Diaz opened a cut over Maynard’s eye but Maynard seemed to score with more hard punches.
Round two saw Maynard score first with a hard right hand. A second right hand seemed to stun Diaz if only momentarily. Maynard seemingly figured out how to stay out side of Diaz’ lanky range and then charge in behind hard punches. Maynard then dropped Diaz but refused to follow him down. The crowd booed as the two fighters taunted each other.
The third round saw the exchanges continue with Maynard still tmaking Diaz miss and scoring. But Diaz began to connect more and more with both punches and kicks. The blood soaked Maynard’s face. Then Maynard went for a take down and on the stand up, Maynard hurt Diaz with shots to the body.
