Regardless of what you thought of Mark McGwire’s hour-long confession/apology last night, you should read Joe Posnanski’s piece on it and the reaction that followed. It’ll either offer you a new perspective, or it’ll echo the way you felt about the interview with Bob Costas.
Mark McGwire And Forgiveness
↵Posnanski is bewildered by those still unwilling to forgive McGwire, which is exactly how I felt in the hours that followed. To hear Ken Rosenthal and the like on MLB Network -- and others elsewhere around the media thereafter -- judging the the levels of contrition moments after McGwire’s very open, honest and tearful apology was maddening.
↵He didn’t admit that it helped his performance! He claims it was only small doses! We only counted a total of four tears fall from his eyes! WE NEED AT LEAST SEVEN TEARS TO MAKE THIS APOLOGY ACCEPTABLE!
↵Give the man a break. At least he sat down for an hour with Bob Costas and allowed himself to be probed at length; much more than can be said for the hundreds of other players from his era who committed the same, or worse, acts as McGwire.
